2024 Cross-Strait "Environmental Protection High-Level Experts Forum" was held in Fuzhou

From September 8 to 10, the 2024 Cross-Strait "Environmental Protection High-Level Expert Forum" was held in Fuzhou City, Fujian Province,"Jointly sponsored by the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences, Taiwan Environmental Sustainable Development Foundation, and Fujian Province Science and Technology Association.

At the meeting, Academician Wang Jinnan, chairman of the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences, pointed out that my country has deeply implemented the battle to defend blue skies, clear waters and pure land, and has become the country with the fastest improvement in air quality in the world. The excellent proportion of surface water is close to the level of developed countries. Positive progress has been made in green and low-carbon development. The world's largest clean power generation system and the world's largest carbon market have been built. An average annual energy consumption growth rate of 3% has supported an average annual economic growth of over 6%. The quality and stability of the ecosystem have been continuously improved, the national ecological protection red line has been delineated, and major biodiversity protection projects have been implemented. Deeply participate in and lead global environmental governance, promote the conclusion, signing, entry into force and implementation of the Paris Agreement, successfully host the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity as the chair, and promote the conclusion of the historic "Kunming-Montreal Global" The Biodiversity Framework "has become an important participant, contributor and leader in the construction of global ecological civilization. The Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences will further strengthen exchanges and cooperation with institutions such as the Taiwan Foundation for Environmental Sustainable Development, actively participate in the cross-Strait ecological and environmental scientific and technological achievements transformation platform, support Taiwanese compatriots and enterprises to participate in green economic development, jointly support the growth of young scientific and technological talents on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and promote Integrated development of cross-Strait ecological environment and green and low-carbon fields.

Chen Longji, chairman of the Taiwan Foundation for Environmental Sustainable Development, introduced that the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences and the Taiwan Foundation for Environmental Sustainable Development have carried out academic exchanges and cooperation in the field of environment since 2012, and the forum has been held until its tenth session. This forum provides a platform for scholars on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to brainstorm, learn from each other, and provides opportunities for strong cooperation and mutual integration. He called on more compatriots in Taiwan, especially young scholars, to come to the mainland to personally experience the continuous improvement of the ecological environment and rapid economic growth, learn from excellent cases, and jointly promote the integrated development of cross-strait ecological environment and green and low-carbon technological innovation., make their own contribution to the sustainable development of the ecological environment of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and all mankind.

Xu Qigong, deputy director of the Department of Science, Technology and Finance of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, emphasized that the Ministry of Ecology and Environment has conscientiously implemented Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization and the spirit of the National Ecological and Environmental Protection Conference, and has made significant progress in scientific and technological innovation in the field of ecological environment such as scientific and technological support, consolidating basic capabilities for scientific and technological innovation, and transforming and applying results. In the next step, we will focus on the construction of Beautiful China and further strengthen scientific and technological support in the field of ecological environment. First, we will strengthen basic scientific research on the construction of Beautiful China, second, we will strengthen key technological research in the construction of Beautiful China, third, we will promote the deployment of major projects in the construction of Beautiful China, and fourth, we will create a scientific and technological support force for the construction of Beautiful China. It is hoped that compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait will uphold the concept of ecological civilization, actively participate in the cross-Strait ecological and environmental scientific and technological achievements transformation platform, and make new and greater contributions to writing a new chapter in cross-Strait ecological civilization construction and jointly building a beautiful China where man and nature coexist harmoniously.

Jiang Zhuwu, vice chairman of the Fujian Province Association for Science and Technology, introduced that Fuzhou focuses on the important mission of building a cross-strait integrated development demonstration zone, puts "strengthening the construction of ecological civilization and promoting green and low-carbon development" in an important position, deeply implements the concept of sustainable development, and accelerates the promotion of green and low-carbon transformation, bringing us local experience and inspiration. The forum was held at the right time and was of great significance. Next, Fuzhou will strengthen in-depth cooperation with Taiwan in industry, humanities, academia and other aspects, strengthen the joint construction and sharing of ecological civilization across the Taiwan Strait, laying a good foundation for cooperation between the two places, and providing a strong impetus for Fujian to promote green and low-carbon development.

This event arranged 6 special branch venues, academic activities such as the Cross-Strait Environmental Protection Youth Forum, and 71 academic reports. The discussion topics covered climate change and carbon neutrality, biodiversity and ecosystem protection and restoration, waste-free cities and sustainable development. Material management, environmental education and corporate environmental governance, new pollutant management and environmental health, etc., jointly shared the cutting-edge progress and future cooperation prospects of green and low-carbon technologies across the Taiwan Strait, and enhanced the confidence and consensus of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait in jointly building ecological civilization.

According to reports, the Cross-Strait Environmental Protection High-Level Experts Forum has been successfully held for 10 times since its establishment in 2012. It has become the most important platform for cross-Strait ecological and environmental exchanges and cooperation, and has played a positive role in jointly building cross-Strait ecological civilization. The forum was hosted by the Fujian Province Environmental Science Society.
