A new study found that Australia's so-called "world-leading" reforestation plan is a "disaster that is not as effective as expected". The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported on the 26th that Andrew McIntahy, the main person in charge of the study and a professor at the Australian National University, said that the carbon credit plan was "largely a scam".

According to the report, in order to reduce carbon emissions, the Australian government has allocated nearly 420,000 square kilometers of land in the inland area for afforestation carbon offset programs. The carbon dioxide absorbed by these forests is converted into carbon credits, which are then sold to mining companies, airlines and other companies that cause large amounts of carbon emissions.

Australian officials say the woodland has absorbed more than 27 million tonnes of carbon emissions since 2013, but researchers have seriously questioned that figure based on satellite imagery of forest growth. Studies have shown that nearly 80 percent of the trees in these farms are stagnant, and even the woodland is shrinking. McIntathy pointed out that the Australian government is in fact selling carbon credits that do not exist. (Arifen)
