Recently,China University of Mining and TechnologyTeachers have been approved for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) methane science research project, and Professors Jason Cohen and Qin Kai of the School of Environment and Surveying and Mapping are the project leaders.
The project is called "Quantifying Coal Mine Methane Emissions Using Multiple Surface and Satellite Observations"(Using a variety of ground and satellite observation data to quantify methane emissions from coking coal mines) and aims to use satellite remote sensing and ground observation technology to objectively and scientifically calculate methane emissions from the coal industry. The project application funding amount is US$690,000, and the funding period is two and a half years.
It is reported that UNEP solicited applications for scientific research projects on methane emission monitoring, assessment and early warning through its directly affiliated International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO). As of February 2024, UNEP has funded only 25 such projects globally, including well-known research institutions such as Harvard University in the United States, Stanford University in the United States, and Bremen University in Germany. The project approved by China University of Mining and Technology is UNEP's first and only such project in China.
In recent years, the carbon emission and air quality remote sensing team co-led by Professor Qin Kai and Professor Jason Cohen of China University of Mining and Technology has served the country's "Methane Emission Control Action Plan", focusing on methane quantitative research in the coal industry, and has been approved by the National Energy Group. Entrusted project "Coal Mine Methane Retrieval Quantitative Service"(Contract funding of 2.07 million yuan), and published relevant papers in international authoritative journals such as Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, proposed a new method for methane emission inversion that coordinates satellite remote sensing and ground observation, and initially established a methane emission list at the scale of a single coal mine.
