On July 10, the China Electricity Council (hereinafter referred to as "China Electricity Council") released the "China Power Industry Annual Development Report 2024"(hereinafter referred to as "Report 2024"), which released basic data of the power industry in 2023. "Report 2024" shows that the green transformation of my country's power industry is accelerating.

New installed capacity of new energy becomes the absolute main body of new energy

The "Report 2024" pointed out that my country's wind power and solar power generation capacity, non-fossil energy power generation installed capacity, and new energy installed capacity all showed rapid growth.

In terms of power generation, as of the end of 2023, the country's full-caliber power generation installed capacity was 2.92224 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 14.0%, and the growth rate increased by 6.0 percentage points year-on-year. Driven by the rapid installation of new energy power generation, wind power and solar power generation have grown rapidly, with total power generation increasing by 280.1 billion kilowatt hours year-on-year, accounting for 46.1% of the total increase in power generation for the year.

In terms of installed capacity, as of the end of 2023, my country's non-fossil energy power generation installed capacity was 1.57541 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 24.1%, and its proportion in total installed capacity exceeded 50% for the first time, reaching 53.9%. The total installed capacity of grid-connected wind power and photovoltaic power generation exceeded 1 billion kilowatts, reaching 1.05 billion kilowatts by the end of 2023, accounting for 36% of the total installed capacity. my country's installed wind power capacity has ranked first in the world for 14 consecutive years, and installed photovoltaic power generation capacity has ranked first in the world for 9 consecutive years.

In terms of power investment and new installed capacity, in 2023, my country's wind power investment will be 275.3 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 36.9%; solar power investment will be 431.6 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 50.7%. Investment in non-fossil energy power generation increased by 39.2% year-on-year, accounting for 89.2% of power investment. In 2023, my country's infrastructure construction will add a total of 307.62 million kilowatts of non-fossil energy power generation capacity, a year-on-year increase of 96.2%, accounting for 83.0% of the total new power generation installed capacity. In 2023, my country will add 7622 kilowatts of grid-connected wind power installed capacity, a year-on-year increase of 97.4%; and the newly added grid-connected solar power installed capacity will be 217.53 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 146.6%. The newly added installed capacity of wind power and photovoltaic power generation accounted for 79.2% of the total newly added installed capacity.

The power industry has achieved fruitful results in carbon emission reduction

The "Report 2024" pointed out that the power industry has solidly promoted carbon reduction and pollution reduction.

Since the launch of the national carbon market (power generation industry), a total of 2162 key emission units in the power generation industry have been included in the first compliance cycle, covering approximately 4.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually; a total of 2257 key emission units in the power generation industry have been included in the second compliance cycle., covering 5.1 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Judging from the scale of tradable carbon dioxide emissions, my country is the largest carbon market in the world.

In 2023, carbon dioxide emissions per unit of thermal power generation nationwide will be approximately 821 g/kWh, a year-on-year decrease of 0.4%, and a decrease of 21.7% from 2005; carbon dioxide emissions per unit of power generation will be approximately 540 g/kWh, a year-on-year decrease of 0.20%, and a decrease of 37.1% compared with 2005. 2257 thermal power companies across the country participate in carbon emissions trading. In 2023, the total transaction volume of carbon quotas exceeded 212 million tons, and the cumulative transaction volume exceeded 14.4 billion yuan.

The trading volume of green electricity and green certificates showed rapid growth

The "Report 2024" pointed out that the pace of my country's new energy entering the power market has further accelerated.

The country's market-oriented trading electricity of new energy is 684.5 billion kilowatt-hours, accounting for 47.3% of the total new energy power generation. The scale of green electricity and green certificate trading has also continued to expand. As of the end of 2023, the cumulative amount of green electricity traded nationwide was 95.4 billion kilowatt-hours, of which the amount of green electricity traded in 2023 was 69.7 billion kilowatt-hours. Since the launch of green certificate trading, the cumulative transaction volume has exceeded 100 million.
