Xinzhuang Square, located at the intersection of six urban roads such as Xuanwu Avenue and Hongshan Road, is a travel and transfer hub in the old city, north of the city, Xianlin and other places.

Recently, the underground pedestrian passage in Xinzhuang has entered the trial operation stage, which has changed the situation a lot. "In the past, when the morning rush hour crossed the Xinzhuang Interchange to the subway station, the distance of 300 meters plus waiting for the red light took nearly ten minutes to pass. Now you can cross the street and change to the subway safely and without any barriers by taking the underpass. Mr. Li, who lives in Xinzhuang Garden, specially called his wife to come and take a walk, and they lamented that the opening of the underpass has brought a lot of convenience to the public travel of the surrounding citizens.

The reporter learned that as the beginning and end of the traffic, slow traffic is an extension of urban public transportation. The establishment of a "bus + slow traffic" transportation mode is an important direction for the future development of urban transportation in Nanjing.

The "Y" shaped passage makes it more comfortable to cross the street

On March 7, the reporter specially took Metro Line 3 to Xinzhuang Station of Nanjing Forestry University to experience the newly opened underground passage. Exit from Metro Exit 1 and walk two steps to the entrance of the underground passage, which has a two-way escalator, spacious passage, bright lighting and clear signage. There were already many pedestrians in the passage, and some people were holding mobile phones to take pictures. It takes 5 minutes to reach the hexagonal plaza through the passageway, which is directly connected to the food passage on the basement floor of the mall, and it is foreseeable that the opening of the underground passage will bring more popularity to these shops.

The newly built passage connects the underground passages in the three areas of Xinzhuang Plaza, Nanlin University, Hexagonal Square and Zijin United Cube. From the map, the main passage is arranged in a "Y" shape, with the intersection point under the green middle zone of Xuanwu Avenue, and the underground passage extends in three directions. It extends north through Xuanwu Avenue to Hexagonal Square, with a total length of 94 meters. To the west, it extends from under the elevated highway to the Zijin United Cube, and there are 2 entrances and exits, corresponding to Hongshan Road and Longpan Road respectively. It extends southeast to the vicinity of Exit 1 of Metro Line 3 next to Nanjing Forestry University. The four entrances and exits of the underground passage are equipped with up and down escalators, and the public is very convenient to pass.

In addition, in the rapid transformation of Yangtze River Avenue, slow lanes and underground pedestrian passages have also been added, and a pedestrian bridge has been erected at the interchange of Yingtian Avenue to facilitate the rapid crossing of Jiangxinzhou citizens.

Under the concept of bus priority, slow traffic priority and green priority, Nanjing has continued to promote the construction of a slow traffic system in recent years to create a slow traffic friendly environment. It is reported that in 2016, the compilation of the "Nanjing Slow Traffic (Walking and Bicycle) System Planning" was carried out, and 243 three-dimensional street passages were planned in the main urban area, including 89 underground passages, 20 overpasses, and 134 rail stations combined with street crossing functions.

Micro-circulation bus service "last mile"

In order to better solve the problem of the last kilometer of public travel, Nanjing Public Transport has also launched the "Little Blue Whale" with a more dexterous body and a more flexible route. "Little Blue Whale" is a micro-circulation bus in the four-level conventional bus network system of "fast, dry, branch, and micro", which mainly solves the problem of "back streets and alleys" that cannot be covered by the line network due to factors such as road traffic conditions, and can not be covered by the line network through the connection branch line.

Since 2023, Nanjing Public Transport has opened more than 10 microcirculation routes such as B10, 201 and 203. As far as the 201 road serving the citizens of the Dingjiazhuang affordable housing area is concerned, the line is quickly connected to Metro Line 7, and the number of passengers on the first day of opening is close to 500 people.

"Bus + slow traffic" makes Nanjing more livable

As the beginning and end of transportation, slow traffic is an extension of urban public transportation. The establishment of a "bus + slow traffic" transportation mode is also an important direction for the future development of urban transportation in Nanjing.

According to Yang Tao, president of Nanjing Institute of Urban and Transportation Planning and Design, the "bus + slow" transportation mode is of great significance to Nanjing's transportation development. First of all, this model can improve the travel efficiency of citizens and reduce traffic congestion. Through a well-developed slow-moving transportation system, citizens can reach bus stops more conveniently, reduce the use of private cars, and alleviate the pressure on road traffic.

Second, it helps to improve the livability of the city. Advocating slow traffic can encourage people to adopt more green and healthy travel methods, reduce motor vehicle pollution, and improve the quality of the urban environment. In addition, the "bus + slow traffic" model can also promote the sustainable development of cities, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and reduce carbon emissions.

For other cities, Nanjing's "bus + slow traffic" model has a certain exemplary role. Other cities can learn from Nanjing's experience and develop transport development strategies suitable for their own regions. However, the transportation characteristics and needs of each city are different, so it is necessary to plan and adjust reasonably according to local conditions in the implementation process.
