Recently, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry completed the installation of a large ore carrier "Camellia Dream" with a 35-meter-high folding marine rotor sail in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, and successfully completed its first voyage to Cabo de Madrid, Brazil. This is not only the first project in China to implement the installation of a 35-meter-high folding marine rotor sail in a horizontal manner, but also the first time that capesize bulk carriers around the world have adopted such green technology, setting a new milestone for ship energy conservation and emission reduction.
The "Camellia Dream" has a total length of 299.94 meters, a profile width of 50 meters and a profile depth of 24.7 meters. It is a 200,000-ton bulk carrier transporting iron ore. This time, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry in Zhoushan mainly carried out routine repair projects such as the installation of two 35-meter-high folding marine rotor sails and 10-year special inspection.
A rotor sail is a device installed on the deck of a ship that uses offshore wind energy to generate auxiliary thrust. It is composed of core components such as a rotatable lightweight outer cylinder, a supporting net, a base, a drive and transmission device, and a control system. It has the advantages of good energy-saving effect, intelligent operation, safety and reliability.
Compared with previous walking and fixed rotor sails, the folding rotor sail is more advanced in design and has a hydraulic folding and automatic adjustment system, which allows it to adaptively adjust according to different environments and ship operating conditions, thereby improving energy utilization efficiency.
It is understood that the "Camellia Dream" wheel equipped with folding rotor sails can reduce the carbon emissions of the main engine by 6% to 10% under different operating conditions and significantly improve the fuel economy of the entire ship. This is a green and low-carbon transformation for the shipbuilding industry provides an efficient energy solution.
"This is the first time that our company has undertaken a rotor sail installation project. From the beginning of the project, the company has attached great importance to it." According to Ma Jian, the single ship manager of Zhoushan COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., from early production preparation to the overall lifting planning of sections and bases in the later stage, full discussions and special arrangements have been carried out for each link and node, and detailed construction has been formulated. The plan has made sufficient preparations in terms of quality safety, technical process, material guarantee, etc., laying a solid foundation for the smooth advancement of the project modification.
The horizontal installation method adopted by the "Camellia Dream" wheel is the first time in China, which undoubtedly poses unprecedented challenges to installation accuracy and operating skills. The connection between the 100 holes on the rotor sail and the base needs to reach millimeter-level accuracy, which is not only related to the stable operation of the rotor sail, but also directly affects the maximization of the wind boosting effect during operation.
The successful modification of the "Camellia Dream" wheel is not only a major breakthrough for Zhoushan in the field of green ship repair and modification, but also a powerful promotion to the green and low-carbon development of the global shipbuilding industry.
