Local standard for carbon emission reduction accounting for the first bamboo material substitution project in Lishui, Zhejiang
"The carbon emission reduction calculation method for bamboo replacing traditional raw materials is still blank in China. This is also the local standard for carbon emission reduction of the first bamboo material substitution project in China." Zhang Feng, an engineer at the Emissions Trading Center of the Ecological Environment Bureau of Lishui City, Zhejiang Province, said,"Replacing plastic with bamboo can reduce carbon emissions and help achieve the dual carbon goal. This local standard we have introduced will help the development of local industries and promote ecological co-prosperity."
Recently, Lishui City's local standard "Project-based Carbon Emission Reduction Accounting Guidelines Bamboo Material Substitution"(DB3311/T285 - 2024) was officially released, and this standard will be officially implemented from June 24 this year.
It is understood that this standard is applicable to the carbon emission reduction calculation of more than 60 mainstream bamboo products such as bamboo materials instead of plastic, steel, leather, synthetic leather, and cement. The standard also clarifies the calculation methods of carbon emissions from key aspects such as raw material collection, transportation, processing and manufacturing, and waste treatment of bamboo products (project scenarios) and traditional material products (baseline scenarios).
"The baseline scenario is the original state before the implementation of emission reduction measures; the project scenario is the state after the implementation and emission reduction benefits are exerted. The emissions of the project scenario are subtracted from the baseline scenario to obtain the carbon emission reduction." Zhang Feng said,"If you want to know how much carbon emissions have been reduced after replacing plastic with bamboo, you can use this standard to calculate."
According to experts, Lishui has an area of nearly 170,000 hectares of bamboo forest. Hundreds of bamboo and wood processing enterprises cover all aspects such as raw material supply, R & D and design, and branded processing. They can produce and process more than 400 kinds of bamboo products. If integrated into the province's carbon benefits, and gain benefits through carbon trading, carbon finance and other channels, the market prospects are broad.
At present, banning and restricting plastics has become the consensus of domestic and foreign governments. Experts said that replacing plastic products with bamboo products is one of the options for the low-carbon transformation of the plastic products industry. Due to its low carbon footprint, bamboo can also be used as a low-carbon environmentally friendly substitute for relatively high-carbon materials such as steel and cement. The relatively mature "bamboo instead of plastic" products on the market, such as bamboo winding composite materials, disposable bamboo tableware, bamboo packaging and other types, can not only replace plastic to meet people's needs, but also meet green environmental protection requirements.
At the scene, Zhang Feng selected two typical bamboo material substitution projects: bamboo flooring from Zhejiang Jiahe Bamboo Industry (using bamboo instead of plastic, etc.) and the bamboo building complex in Baoxi Township, Longquan (using bamboo instead of steel, using bamboo instead of leather, etc.), and gave the reporter a calculation. For example, Jiahe Bamboo Industry uses bamboo materials instead of plastic to produce floors, which can reduce the use of 13,400 tons of plastic every year, and the carbon emission reduction in each key link is 37,000 tons of carbon dioxide. If we consider that companies recycle bamboo and wood waste as biomass fuel, the emission reduction can reach 62,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Based on the calculation of Zhejiang's carbon inclusive transaction price of 80-100 yuan/ton, in theory, the company's carbon inclusive transaction revenue can reach 6.2 million yuan.
"The carbon emission reduction accounting standards for bamboo material substitution projects will give full play to their economic, ecological and social benefits, and further enhance the 'green content' and 'gold content' of bamboo material products." Yu Weizhen, deputy director of the Ecological Environment Bureau of Lishui City, said,"Lishui will rely on this standard to stimulate the value potential of voluntary carbon emission reduction projects and further enrich carbon inclusive products."
