In October 2023, the EU carbon tariff (CBAM, also known as the carbon border adjustment mechanism) officially entered the trial operation stage, and international importers began to require global export enterprises to declare greenhouse gas emissions in the production process of relevant commodities and carry out environmental impact assessments of the whole life cycle of products, which also means that high carbon emissions in any link of the supply chain will lead to more carbon control costs for export products, which has formed an invisible trade barrier for export enterprises.

In Jiaxing Port Area, Zhejiang, Zhejiang Xinhui New Materials Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Xinhui New Materials) has provided a reference sample for import and export production enterprises to face international "green trade barriers" through green and low-carbon transformation and upgrading.

In the production workshop of Xinhui New Materials, large-scale intelligent production equipment is lined up, and pieces of white butyl rubber continue to "grow" in it. In the factory area, the robotic arm methodically feeds the packaged butyl rubber products into standard containers. Loading and unloading forklifts travel back and forth between the warehouse and the transporter. Boxes of finished goods are packed into trucks and transported to processing plants at home and abroad. The annual output of the company's butyl rubber and halogenated butyl rubber has reached 100,000 tons, and they are stably sold to Europe and Southeast Asia and other countries.

"Under the background of the 'dual carbon' strategy, in order to reduce the trade impact of carbon tariffs and comply with market demand, our company has gradually carried out the construction of a carbon footprint system since June 2023, and carried out specific work on the construction of a carbon footprint system in four aspects: carbon emission verification, LCA product life cycle assessment, CDP disclosure, and SBTi scientific carbon targets. You Changling, vice president of Xinhui New Materials, introduced.

In June 2023, Xinhui New Materials obtained the Organizational Carbon Emission Certificate and Life Cycle Assessment Verification Statement issued by SGS, an internationally recognized testing, inspection and certification body. It can be seen in the certificate that in accordance with the international standards of ISO14064-1:2018 and ISO14044:2006, the direct greenhouse gas emissions of Xinhui New Materials in 2022 will reach 755.98 tons, the indirect greenhouse gas emissions generated by the products used by the organization will be 499,148.39 tons, and 7.66 kg of carbon dioxide will be produced during the production of each kilogram of butyl rubber.

Xinhui New Materials selects the appropriate carbon emission reduction route based on the carbon emission situation, and invests 83 million yuan to implement the whole process of green energy saving, pollution reduction and carbon reduction project in order to achieve carbon reduction in the production process of products.

"The whole process of green energy saving, pollution reduction and carbon reduction project contains a total of 6 contents, mainly some technical transformation of the existing process, so as to achieve the purpose of reducing pollutants and carbon emissions, but also save costs. You Changling introduced that in terms of process upgrading, the project adopts the world's leading "cyclone separation + direct sol" process and "low-carbon devotolatilization + circulating air" technology to reduce steam consumption and pollutant emissions, and improve product quality.
